Olympic chief: Russia expects to top medal table at Beijing Olympics

MOSCOW, July 25 (Xinhua) -- The Russian Olympic team expects to rank first in term of total medals in the upcoming Beijing Summer Olympic Games, Chairman of the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) Leonid Tyagachev said.

"We will try our best to obtain good results, "Tyagachev said in an interview with a local newspaper. "Despite that the competition is high, we aim to win one more gold medal than China, and finish first in the medal table," he said.

The Olympics have become an event of national significance in Russia, Tyagachev said, noting that Russian President Dmitry Medvedev will see the national team off on July 29, and Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin will attend the opening ceremony of the Olympics on Aug. 8.

This is unprecedented and clearly demonstrates the great importance the country has attached to the Olympics, the chairman said.

Olympic Village: home for all athletes

Olympic Village: home for all athletes

By Sportswriter Lou Chen

BEIJING, July 27 (Xinhua) -- Italian lasagna, Beijing roast duck or kosher foods? Athletes from more than 200 countries and regions may find their favorite home foods in the Beijing Olympic Village.

The diversity of meals, divided into different zones including Chinese, Asian, international and Mediterranean, underlines the meticulous preparation in the village which houses about 16,000 athletes, coaches and their entourage. The village officially opened on Sunday.

"We want to make this place a nice, quiet and comfortable place to stay, a place that feels like home," said village secretary-general Wu Jingmi.

The sprawling complex, which runs 800 meters from north to south and 900 meters across, is only 20 minutes walk northwest of two centerpiece Games venues - the Bird's Nest stadium and aquatic venue Water Cube. The distance is one of the closest in all Olympics.

The village contains a main restaurant that can feed 5,000 people, teahouses, coffee shops, a barbershop, post office, shops, library and a clinic.

In catering alone, some 100 foreign and 2,300 Chinese chefs and waiters offer 24-hour service every day. Menus change every eight days, and the meals are athletes special.

"We have very strict rules to make sure the foods are safe and calories for each dish are made clear for the athletes own discretion, because there may be stringent weight rules in some events," Wu said.

Hundreds of home-style foods, along with customized beds, space for religious masses and entertainment facilities, are part of the efforts to provide comfortable stay for all athletes, Wu said.

Other services like chances of getting a Chinese name add colors to their Olympic experience. "I believe they will find it interesting to stay here," Wu said.

Construction of the complex started in the summer of 2005, and the total of 42 apartment buildings were built with water recycling technologies, environmentally friendly construction materials and solar-powered lighting. The apartments save two thirds of the energy costs of ordinary ones in Beijing.

Alternative-fuelled vehicles carry athletes within the village, to and from the Olympic venues. The complex was built according to IOC (International Olympic Committee) rules, Wu said, but elements of Chinese culture have been weaved into the design and decoration, making it not just any another Olympic village.

It used the colors of Beijing's grey brick walls, white stone balconies, paper-cuts and red lanterns. Cultural performances like embroidery, woodcarving, painting and Beijing Opera mask will be held in the courtyard of the international zone.

"The village is a place where the athletes can unwind and get to know Chinese culture. We want to give them a full experience with Chinese culture," said Deng Yaping, a famed Olympic table tennis champion and deputy village head.

In line with IOC regulations, a religious center had been set up in the village, she said.

Deng said on Friday that 46 countries and regions have had some representation in the village since its preliminary opening on July 20. The village is expected to be fully lodged.

Secretary-general Wu said thousands of staff and volunteers are ready to receive the athletes, and anticipated no easy task. "We have made several hundreds of plans for every type of contingencies, but security, services and management are still big challenges," he said.

The single task of taking all the athletes to the opening ceremony on Aug. 8 is daunting. "We have to arrange 360 buses to take them to the Bird's Nest. The whole process will take at least one and half hour, and that's only possible if the cooperation between the village and the delegations goes well," he said.

Before the July 20 test run, the Beijing Organizing Committee for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad (BOCOG) President Liu Qi said a well-run Olympic Village was a significant part of a successful Games. He ordered the village staff to keep working on the details and provide maximal possible service to all the athletes.

The village will close on Aug. 27. Also as the Paralympic Village, it will reopen on Aug. 30 and close on Sept. 20.

Beijing sets up sex determination lab for Olympics

Beijing sets up sex determination lab for Olympics

BEIJING, July 27 (Xinhua) -- Beijing has set up a sex determination lab to test female Olympic athletes suspected to be males.

Suspected athletes will be evaluated from their external appearances by experts and undergo blood tests to examine their sex hormones, genes and chromosomes for sex determination, according to Prof. Tian Qinjie of Peking Union Medical College Hospital.

Initial test results would be available in three days, while an official result takes seven days, he said.

The test aims to maintain fairness of the Games, and to rule out inaccurate test results.

Experts say test results for about one in 500 to 600 athletes are abnormal.

The tests are to be conducted at the Peking Union Medical College Hospital.

Polish runner Ewar Kobukkowska, who won a gold medal in the women's 4 X 100 meter relay and the bronze in the women's 100 meter sprint at the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, was the first athlete to be caught in a gender test after she failed the early form of a chromosome test in 1967.

She was found to have a rare genetic condition which gave her no advantage over other athletes, but was nonetheless banned from competing in the Olympics and professional sports.

At the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, eight athletes failed the tests but were all cleared by subsequent examinations.

In another case, Indian middle distance runner Santhi Soundarajan who won the silver medal in the 800 meters track event at the 2006 Asian Games in Doha, Qatar, failed the sex determination test and was stripped of her medal.

Olympics suck up China's already scarce water

(07-14) 04:00 PDT Changgucheng, China -- Three years ago, local government officials told farmers in this village of 7,000 residents to stop using water from a reservoir near their wheat and corn fields. If they needed water, the farmers were told, they would have to dig a well.

"They said there wasn't enough water," Jia Jianguo, 60, recalled.

At their own expense, the farmers dug a 90-foot well. But even though the new irrigation system worked fine, the locals have been forced to pool their meager resources each year that the water recedes to keep their crops alive. The well is now 135 feet deep, and the groundwater is seeping away as fast as the province's increasingly scarce water supplies are being channeled some 100 miles southwest to the thirsty capital of 15 million inhabitants, Beijing.

The Changgucheng farmers were never told that their reservoir is one of four in the province tapped to meet the capital's demand for water leading up to and during the Olympic Games, which begin in August. The Games are expected to increase Beijing's water consumption by at least 5 percent, or 162,000 acre-feet, according to a recent report by Probe International, a Canadian environmental group. An acre-foot is about 326,000 gallons.
From south to north

The channel is needed not only to make more water available for Beijing, but to clean Olympic venues and to flush out the city's polluted canals and lakes.

It is part of a mammoth $25 billion diversion scheme to bring water from southern rivers to the arid north to bolster Beijing's water supply.

Ecologists say this is just another example of how the push to showcase a green Olympics is creating environmental problems in provinces outside Beijing. Major polluting factories have been shut down or moved out of the capital for the Olympics. Diverting Hebei's water is just one of many potentially problematic actions, experts say.
'Not a fundamental solution'

The study by Probe International says Beijing's water transfers from north and south, along with a growing number of ultra-deep wells in the Karst Mountains near the city, are a recipe for environmental calamity.

"Such policies of taking ever more water from ever further jurisdictions beyond Beijing may be an emergency measure to ease Beijing's water shortages and flush out its polluted waterways, but it is not a fundamental solution," said the report. "With each new project to tap water somewhere else, demand for water only increases, and at an ever greater cost to China's environment and economy.

"Whether diverting surface water or digging deeper for groundwater, the underlying solution proposed is like trying to quench a thirst by drinking poison."
Urbanization and drought

Dai Qing, a Beijing-based environmental activist once jailed for criticizing the massive Three Gorges Dam, says Beijing and its surroundings are facing a serious water crisis.

Hyper-speed urbanization has doubled Beijing's water consumption between 1995 and 2005 to some 3.2 million acre-feet annually. That, coupled with a decade-long drought, has left the capital dry and its groundwater severely depleted.

Dai predicts there will be no water crisis during the Olympics. But she warns that it will take "10 years, 20 years, even a century" to restore depleted water resources. Dai says the problem is China's political structure, which doesn't allow the truth about the water crisis to be made public or permit criticism about state water policies.

"Ordinary Chinese, we have no right to ask why," she said.
Tailed by police

That was underscored last week when three reporters visited Hebei province with Zhang Junfeng, a researcher with the Green Earth Volunteer Organization, a Beijing nongovernmental organization. Zhang, who is strong supporter of China's right to host the Olympics and believes the Games will have a positive long-term impact, wanted to take the group to see the four Hebei reservoirs sending water to Beijing.

Plainclothes officials and police who refused to reveal their names or identities stopped the group at every turn, tailing Zhang's car for nine hours and intimidating locals from talking to the reporters.

A group of 15, only one of whom identified himself as a police officer, blocked a road leading into the Wangkui reservoir, placing a narrow, long table across the road.

Though they insisted the area had been shut down to visitors since 2004, locals driving up the road for an afternoon swim were clearly befuddled by the blockade.
'This area is closed'

"We welcome you to the area," said a man who professed to be the reservoir manager, before repeating, "This area is closed."

The officials, who then detained Zhang and the journalists, agreed to release the group if they left the area.

An unmarked car, however, followed the reporters for the rest of the day.

A local resident who refused to give his name said he had asked the police why they had turned the foreigners away from the lake.

"They said it was because of the Olympics, and something about pollution," the man said.

This story is part of a series exploring the changes that China's first Olympic Games are bringing to Beijing and the rest of the nation. To read the other installments, go to sfgate.com/ZCUV.
China's water woes

Over-extraction of groundwater and falling water tables are huge problems for China, particularly in the north. Environmental activists warn that the nation is facing a future of water shortages, water pollution and continuing deterioration in water quality. Beijing is one of the world's most water-scarce mega-cities, with a deficit of 324,000 acre-feet annually.

According to some environmentalists:

-- Half of China's 617 largest cities - including Beijing - face water shortages.

-- At least 300 million people do not have access to safe drinking water.

-- 90 percent of cities' groundwater and 75 percent of rivers and lakes are polluted.

-- Chinese industries dump 40 billion to 60 billion tons of untreated wastewater into rivers and lakes every year.

-- 90 million people are exposed to water pollution on a daily basis.

-- Beijing golf courses use 21,900 acre-feet of water each year.
